Gaming Inbox: How often do you buy video games at full price?

Tuesday’s inbox wonders if the PS5’s early lead could end up hurting it in the long run, as one reader feels sorry for Sony Bend.

I imagine the writer of Days Gone already regrets saying what he did, but I think it’s worth pointing out what a thoughtless comment it was, suggesting that the people had a moral imperative to buy games at full price in order to support businesses. And for a Sony game and more, not an independent studio for two!

The only consideration I have when buying a game is how cheap I can buy it, versus how fast I want to play it. Now, if it’s a great sequel to something I enjoyed that has great reviews, then maybe I’ll buy it at full price. More likely I’ll wait a few months to save one or two, but there are exceptions (perhaps Resident Evil Village, especially since it’s been so long since a big game came out).

If it’s not a favorite, and especially if it’s a brand new IP, I’ll be very careful because I have no idea what I’m getting. Or, in that case, everything suggests that Days Gone is a poor use of the Sony formula and absolutely not worth full price. For this guy to say we should throw money at them, before we have a clue whether we like their game or not, is just madness. I don’t know how much money he makes but I don’t get enough to waste money on something that seems the complete opposite of a sure thing.

Scary Cheese Everything about Resident Evil sounds really good at the moment, but I agree with GC’s concerns about the lack of cheese. It’s one of the fundamental ingredients of Resident Evil and it’s a hard thing to do, especially since most of the time Capcom doesn’t seem to have intended it at all.

Village has these wacky characters but apparently the story is still taken seriously so I don’t know. It’s far from enough to discourage me from buying it, but having a 100% serious Resident Evil doesn’t make sense to me. Especially since one of the great things about old games is how ridiculous and cheesy it could be and still really scary. Like, that was one of the magic things about gaming.

You can have cheesy horror movies, but they’re never that scary, but Resi was kind of and often within minutes. Although to be honest, I’m more worried about the Resident Evil 4 remake. If they try to take this nonsense seriously, it’s going to be an absolute disaster.

So the PlayStation 5 is the best-selling console in the United States? As myopic as it is, you can see why Sony thinks it’s doing it right and doesn’t need to explain itself to anyone. Likewise, you can see why Microsoft is convinced that it has to play by very different rules going forward now.

It’s ironic, but the success of the PlayStation 5 might be the worst thing for Sony right now. They may now think they’ve got it all covered and when Microsoft’s plan kicks into high gear in a year or two, I think there’s a real danger they’ll be caught with their pants down.

Could they still succeed and win the generation anyway? On. But I don’t think a plan B would hurt at this point and at least some sort of public sign that they’re going to be tackling things like Game Pass with their own rivals.

So, after playing the Maiden demo and being impressed, I was really looking forward to seeing last weekend’s demo.

Sadly, all it made me was want to vomit. I haven’t felt as sick as Sunday since playing Alien Trilogy on PS1. No other game has made me feel like this, although I haven’t tried VR in any form other than a box for my phone. Does anyone else get motion sickness from flatscreen gaming? StickyUK Currently playing: Astro’s Playroom and Black Mesa

GC: It’s not as uncommon as you might think, although it’s odd that the Maiden demo didn’t affect you in the same way.

I love this resurrection of the beat ’em-up scrolling right now, this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is incredibly relevant and I’m here for it.

I hope they do The Simpsons and the X-Men next, which I believe are also Konami games. After the disappointment over things like Avengers and Ultimate Marvel Alliance, I think these games are a much purer representation of what they’re trying to be: silly, crushing comfort food with your favorite characters.

The Simpsons might be tough because I think, as a reader recently suggested, EA still has the license, but Marvel could give theirs to anyone they want. If I were them, I’d sign Dotemu right away and let the senseless violence begin! Iron Guy

Inconsistent Ideas The interview with the artist who worked on F-Zero GX and said it needed a ‘big new idea’ to get Nintendo to bring it back or, worse, Miyamoto’s comments on ‘That’ do you miss what we haven’t done yet? ” is just infuriating as an F-Zero fan. Arguably more than any other Nintendo game, no big ideas are needed, what we want are HD graphics and new tracks, but keeping the tight controls and hard GX difficulty.

These comments don’t make sense either. Where were the new ideas for the latest Donkey Kong Country or New Super Mario Bros. games? Not to mention Pokémon which has effectively been the same game every time since Red and Blue. But these games have mostly been well received because they are good at what they do. In fact, the waxing in the new idea of the second screen came at the expense of Star Fox Zero, the game probably would have been better and sold more if it had normal orders.

The reason F-Zero didn’t get a sequel is of course because GX didn’t sell very well. I just wish they said it up front. At least we have Fast Racing Neo/RMX! barry

Final Designation So when we talk about the current generation and the last generation, which is the Nintendo Switch? It’s next-gen technology, but it’s certainly still an active format and likely will be for many years to come, far longer than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

And what if the Switch Pro is much more powerful, will that count as current gen/a different form factor?

GC: We consider the current Switch to be last-gen, but it doesn’t really matter if we don’t know if there will ever be another next-gen.

I’m overly sympathetic to the team at Sony Bend, because it must be frustrating and disappointing to be denied the opportunity to develop a sequel to a game you’re proud of.

However, I feel like the creative director’s answer doesn’t take into account the reason. It’s in relation to him stating that you should buy a game at full price, if you like it, to support the game.

If you like a developer’s previous work, I could accept that. For example, I can imagine that a lot of people will buy day one of whatever Supergiant Games produces next because they have a string of acclaimed hits. Although I’m not necessarily saying that’s a wise thing to do (watch Cyberpunk 2077).

In general, I think that’s asking a lot of people to expect them to buy a game at full price because they like the game. I mean, if you haven’t played the game, you don’t know if you’re going to like it or not, so his argument just doesn’t make sense.

This is why people read reviews, to see if the game sounds right up their street and is well made, interesting or exciting. If the game is mediocre, like Day’s Gone, then people are going to wait until it drops in price before trying it. As frustrating as it may be for the developer, that’s how the world works.

I now wonder where someone at Nintendo got the idea for the name Bowser? Were they just picking random names from a directory? Were we lucky the King of the Koopas didn’t end up being named Smith or Mainwaring? The spirit is breathtaking.

I must say that I find it fascinating how Amazon and Google are trying to become a game company. Not even all of Microsoft’s money guaranteed them anything, but these two, starting from scratch, look absolutely crap. Money before experience I guess.

This Week’s Hot Topic This weekend’s inbox topic was suggested by reader 84Colbat, who asks which single-player game have you spent the most time on?

Whether it’s replaying the same game multiple times, repurchasing it when it’s re-released on new formats, or simply playing the same save game for a long time, which primarily single-player game have you spent the most time playing? time over the years?

Is it unusual for you to spend so long with a single game, and what do you think is the minimum time a full-priced single-player game should last to be good value?
