When you’re looking for a long-running video game franchise that deftly combines excellent storytelling, memorable characters, and non-stop violence in a massive open world, Grand Theft Auto has to be at the top of that list. He became one of the biggest names in the industry thanks to over-the-top action set in incredibly dynamic environments.
But a big part of what makes the franchise work is that it’s not afraid to be funny at times, or even downright weird. Many of the characters have hilarious lines, especially Trevor from GTA V. Most of what comes out of his mouth is a combination of hilarious and horror.
10 “I said something nice, not something expensive!”
GTA V was the first game in the franchise to use three protagonists, but the main one was arguably Franklin. Much of the story hinges on his journey and the choice he has to make at the end of the game.
When Trevor, one of the other protagonists, met Franklin’s Aunt Denise, things went south incredibly quickly. He was seduced and gave her $7 to buy something nice. When she protested, her rant included the epic line, “I said something nice, not something expensive!”
9 “Awesome. Looks like the wedding was at least profitable.”
Grand Theft Auto IV brought players back to Liberty City, this time as Niko Bellic. He was an immigrant and former soldier from Yugoslavia who came to America in search of a better life. Niko was also incredibly whiny and boring to play.
When Niko was telling a woman named Sara about her ex-husband, she excitedly described how much money she was going to make for him. Niko simply commented, “Great. Looks like the wedding was at least profitable.” She didn’t disagree.
8 “…And tell him we’ll need chips and dip and…”
Knowing Trevor was a bit of a double-edged sword. He was an incredibly loyal friend, and certainly the kind of person who would help in the most difficult situations. But he was also a plague that tore someone’s world apart.
When Trevor went to Los Santos, he crashed into an apartment owned by Floyd, the cousin of his “friend” Wade. Trevor destroyed Floyd’s life in a manner typified by the phrase, “Tell Floyd it’s a great idea to meet at the condo, and tell him we’ll need chips, dips, and prostitutes. “
7 “No, I think you’re pretty stupid for both of us.”
Although there are several games in the franchise at this point, Grant Theft Auto: Vice City is still considered one of the best. It tells the story of Tommy Vercetti, an ex-con who found himself in a town analogous to Miami in the 1980s.
Tommy liked to shout. A lot. And he was constantly exasperated by all the unrepentant idiocy around him. When Umberto Robina asked if he was stupid, he replied, “No, I think you’re stupid enough for both of us.”
6 “Who’s Tommy F@#$?”
Although it’s not always obvious, there’s actually a lot of continuity between games in the GTA universe. This was especially true of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was set in the 1990s version of the Southern California franchise.
Main character CJ was talking to a character in Vice City named Ken Rosenberg, who brought up that game’s main character, Tommy. CJ responded with the only possible and logical question: “Who is Tommy?”
5 “So You’re Giving Me A Lecture…”
The Franklin story part in GTA V was perhaps the most engaging aspect of it. His desire to succeed was the trigger for the whole game. Also, he was the one who had the choice to kill Trevor, Michael, or none of them at the climax of the game.
At one point, his friend Lamar and his aunt Denise berated him for not being there for his future former gang members. He came back with, “So you’re giving me a lecture about not being a good enough gangbanger?”
4 “…But I’m productivity personified.”
It’s hard to pinpoint which life choice Trevor made was the worst, simply because it’s odd when he did anything close to a good one. When the story caught up with him in the desert, he ended up killing a GTA IV character.
But if there’s one thing Trevor loved, it’s engaging in any possible vice life throws at, which led to this guy getting killed. But according to him, it’s all part of his system: “I’m mostly excited about speed, but I’m productivity personified.”
3 “Ooh, you just made this really easy for me.”
One odd fact about Trevor that stands out in the match was the fact that he was Canadian. This was mentioned most often during his Rampage missions. In fact, insults around his Canadian heritage were often the incident inciting his violent tendencies.
It happened when a guy named Joe said, “Stay out of it, stupid Canadian!” Trevor came back with, “Ooh, you just made it easy for me.” Things went downhill quickly for Joe from there.
2 “If That’s Our Standard Of Kindness…”
Michael had a lot of family issues in GTA V, which was one of the many factors that made him go to therapy. In particular, he really didn’t seem to like his son, who spent most of his life doing things that Michael hated.
During a session with Dr. Isiah Friedlander, the subject of his son came up and Michael went into great detail about why he didn’t like him. Saying, “If that’s our standard of goodness, then no wonder this country is screwed,” wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.
1 “You made some money, and you became a turd.”
One of Trevor’s best qualities was his ability to get right to the heart of a situation. He didn’t mince words and didn’t need small talk. Sure, it often ended with gangs of drug dealers trying to kill him, but that was still part of his charm.
It was certainly true with Michael. They had a lot of baggage from their old days in the same gang, and Michael faking his death. But even as their relationship was being rebuilt, he knew how to reach out to Michael, especially when he said, “You made some money and you turned into shit.”
