NEW YORK (CNS) — The problems with “Mortal Kombat” (Warner Bros.) go way beyond off-kilter spelling. & # XD; & # xD; In fact, director Simon McQuoid’s feature debut – a reboot adaptation of a video game series previously brought to the big screen via a few films dating back to the mid-1990s – is, by turns, brutal, ponderous and silly. & # XD; & # xD; Working from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, McQuoid traces the exploits of Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a mixed martial arts fighter whose languid career becomes the least of his problems after becoming embroiled in a extended cosmic smackdown. The struggle pits the oppressed forces of planet Earth against those of a realm called Outworld. & # XD; & # xD; Under the guidance of self-identified “god” Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Cole teams up with, among others, a duo of Special Forces veterans, Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Jackson Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), and a sick-tempered, pot-mouthed mercenary known as Kano (Josh Lawson) to take on the warriors of Outworld, led by wizard Shang Tsung (Chin Han). & # xD; & # xD; The resulting bloody mayhem includes the disappearance of characters – some human, some monstrous – through incineration, dismemberment and pulping. The fact that Cole is primarily motivated by a desire to protect his wife, Allison (Laura Brent), and daughter, Emily (Matilda Kimber), whom Shang Tsung has targeted, is little compensation for such savagery. & # XD; & # xD; When they’re not too busy crushing heads or sawing opponents in half, the supposedly good guys promote a convoluted mythos that, in addition to fake deities, also involves the ability of certain chosen individuals to activate their inner energy, called arcane, and therefore to gather a superp characteristic power. Once thus improved, he quickly returns to the slaughter with more enthusiasm than ever. & # XD; & # xD; The film contains unscriptural religious ideas, excessive bloody violence, gruesome views, a few soft swearings and pervasive foul language and a little coarse and rude.
