SAN FRANCISCO, May 4 – GTA V usually gives players a chance to let loose as faithless, depraved villains, but now the video game’s role-playing (RP) mode offers a chance to experiment with softer roles.
Acting as police officers, ambulance drivers, and students, RP players must stay in character as convincingly as possible.
The trend is attracting an audience on Twitch and Youtube, including high profile streamers.
No more driving like a maniac and no more fighting with strangers. In the fictional city of Los Santos, where players have long been accustomed to stealing cars and withholding groceries, change may be afoot.
In Grand Theft Auto V Roleplay (GTA V RP), a longstanding tradition in the game’s single and multiplayer modes has been thrown to the wind. In GTA RP, you take a role and play it for real.
The runaway success of the new game mode caused a stir with LeBron James, Travis Scott and big names in the game on board.
Roleplay is nothing new, but the popularity of Twitch and the spontaneous entertainment it offers has given it new life.
On Twitch, it is the second most watched game in the world with 61.24 million hours watched in seven days. And the entertainment it offers has a real-time quality with all the story, jokes and twists of a familiar and reassuring TV series.
It’s certainly easy to watch the role-playing mode, but joining as a player is a whole different story. There are many servers, but they are all regulated by very specific rules.
