An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that, following Tencent’s acquisition of Leyou, it had “not been able to secure terms to continue with this title at this time.”
The team will be moved to other projects, and Amazon shared their disappointment at not being able to bring this project to life.
This joins Breakaway and Crucible as another canceled project for Amazon Game Studios, which itself was the subject of another Bloomberg report that detailed the malfunction and difficulties the studio faced.
Amazon still has an MMORPG in the works called New World, though that project has seen some delays and is now slated for release in August 2021.
For fans disappointed by the news of this cancellation, Turbine’s Lord of the Rings Online is still active, and we still have Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings series and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum video game to look forward to.
