10 Older Video Games That Still Boast Amazing Graphics

Some video games age like fine wine, while others don’t. Sometimes the gameplay is to blame, but often the visuals are criticized for not holding up against dazzling new titles. Then there are some games that continue to look like a million bucks, even decades after the initial release.

These are the titles that stick with players and continue to attract them for any game. The world’s most advanced graphics engines aren’t necessary to make a visual impact, as these 10 titles easily prove, just waiting for gamers to give them another shot.

Ten Soulcalibur (Dreamcast)

Dix Soulcalibur (Dreamcast)

Even without the benefit of modern high resolution, the Dreamcast port of Soulcalibur is still a graphical phenomenon that demands respect. In some ways, this port was even better than the arcade version and took full advantage of Dreamcast’s superior rendering capabilities to dazzle gamers unaccustomed to such high-fidelity visuals.

Soulcalibur’s character models and backgrounds are still great, but it’s the inclusion of additional content, like individual character kata demos, that really adds a nice red bow to this package. No matter how old the game, Soulcalibur still clings to its legacy.

9 Grand Theft Auto V (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

9 Grand Theft Auto V (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

It’s hard to believe, but Grand Theft Auto V is eight years old at this point, but the game shows no signs of slowing down. Players are still actively engaged in the community and the modding scene continues to create amazing new content, such as GTA V Remastered. In short, he always has a full gas tank.

Visually, GTA V is still able to give newer PCs a run for their money, which is a testament to the global engine. The character models, environments, and of course the cars are beautifully rendered and look just as good as they did the day they were released. This is not an easy task.

8 God Of War (PlayStation 2)

The original God of War shows signs of age in the texture department, especially when it comes to resolution. That doesn’t mean the game has suffered terribly in a post-4K world. In fact, God of War still has a lot to offer when it comes to graphics, largely thanks to the way they’re implemented.

Sure, the textures look a little muddy here, but the frame rates are still solid, and that’s important for those massive, screen-toting boss battles. That’s part of the charm of the game – the constant reinvention of itself with each new area. God of War will not throw in the towel, even though many players have moved on to the new chapter.

7 Crysis 3 (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

The original Crysis was once used as a theoretical benchmark for every PC build after 2008, and that’s a testament to its visuals. Since that time, it has been revealed that the game isn’t as optimized as it should have been, a fact highlighted by the recent Crysis Remastered re-release, which stayed true to the game’s focus. original on the performance of the single-core processor.

Fast forward two games, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by Crysis 3. It’s an amazing world – a mix of modern urban landscapes overrun by nature looking to reclaim its territory. It’s easily one of the most visually stunning games ever made, which isn’t bad for a game that dropped in 2013.

6 Contra III: The Alien Wars (Super NES)

This one takes us back to the 16-bit age when the Super Nintendo was battling the Sega Genesis for dominance. One of the key titles in its arsenal was a 16-bit follow-up to the hit Contra franchise, which debuted on the NES with three games. It was also one of the most frantic and exhilarating shooters ever made.

Even today, Contra III looks utterly spectacular, thanks to a mix of insane explosions, psychedelic effects, massive boss fights, and fast-paced fire. The entire game is one long episode of tachycardia crammed into a cartridge, and it still holds up in the looks department, despite being nearly 30 years old.

5 Half-Life 2 (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

Half-Life may have taken the FPS world by storm, but it was the sequel that really solidified its reputation as the godfather shooter. The sequel was an improvement over the original, thanks to Valve’s use of the Source 2 engine, which greatly amplified the game’s graphics, textures, and environments.

Even though graphics technologies have jumped many times since its debut, Half-Life 2 still makes players sit up and wave whenever its name is mentioned. With spectacular lighting, texture, and environmental tricks up its sleeve, the game manages to look fresher than its 2004 release date would suggest.

4 Far Cry 2 (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

Of all the Far Cry games, the second is one that players continue to look back on with fond memories. It’s hard to imagine why, since Far Cry 2 was, by far, the most unforgiving and punishing of the entire franchise. Any game that requires the player to start out sick with malaria and continue to search for medicine is an unconditional offer.

Graphically, Far Cry 2 is absolutely brilliant. It’s a masterclass in world-building design, and the feeling of actually being there is ever-present. Sure, the franchise may be using new advanced engines, but for some reason Far Cry 2 continues to give them their money’s worth.

3 Killzone 2 (PlayStation 3)

Killzone 2 is known for a controversial E3 trailer that didn’t actually work on the game’s final engine. Killzone 2 looked awesome, and it still does. Even though the PlayStation 3 has long been put to pasture, this FPS title wears its stripes proudly.

The dank and brooding atmosphere, eerie lighting effects and industrial world textures are still top-notch, as is the jaw-dropping gameplay. There’s an argument to be made for the game to be ported to other platforms the same way Horizon Zero Dawn was ported to PC last year. Hope someone is listening.

2 Homeworld 2 (PC)

The original Homeworld may be a fan favorite, but it’s showing its age in the textures and models department. The recently released Remastered Pack did the game justice the same way it also bolstered the sequel for a new audience. But what about the original Homeworld 2? Does it stack?

Fortunately, yes. Sure, it’s getting long in the tooth, but it’s hard to say exactly what major visual leap happened between this title and the original. Even outside of its remastered form, Homeworld 2 is still one of the most amazing and beautiful space strategy games ever made.

1 Alien Soldier (Sega Genesis)

The Sega Genesis was limited by a 64-color palette, which wasn’t good news for its odds against the Super NES. However, the 16-bit gaming machine has managed to hold its own, thanks in large part to developers being able to leverage the hardware to create amazing titles like Alien Soldier.

Yes, many Genesis games seem the part, but Alien Soldier was something else, entirely. Massive sprites, smooth gameplay, and big explosions are just a few highlights. For an old 16-bit title running on a limited set of colors, it certainly manages to impress the eye more than 25 years after the fact.
