After eight years since the last entry and several years of rumors, fans have recently suspected that the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 will be announced soon (again). Although the new Grand Theft Auto is little more than a rumor, there are some hints that Rockstar is already plotting the franchise’s next entry. Everything so far seems to point to a GTA set in the 80s, as there have been plenty of references to Grand Theft Auto Vice City to keep the rumors alive.
Even though Rockstar hasn’t made any announcements, fans have started to theorize about the franchise’s next installment. Many have started connecting the dots, and with just a job listing in Rockstar India, some have concluded that Grand Theft Auto 6 is connected to its Vice City installment, which could mean the game is returning to that era. While a nostalgic GTA is an interesting idea, is it really the best course of action given the target audience?

Even more, there are plenty of other ways to take GTA missions and add a modern twist in a more relatable way than relying on the 1980s to tell that story.

Some of the fashion that characterized the 80s has resurfaced in recent years, so it’s the most exploitable element that a game like Grand Theft Auto could take advantage of. The neon colors and excess hairspray could certainly make for some interesting characters, but then again, is that enough to get players new to Grand Theft Auto interested?
It’s not like the 2020s lacked subcultures with easily recognizable aesthetics that could be incorporated into a game like Grand Theft Auto, without any real risk of feeling overwhelmed. In terms of character design, it seems like leaning towards modern trends might actually produce characters that are far more versatile and interesting than including old GTA references. Of course, that would immediately make the characters a little easier to understand than referencing people from a 40-year-old era.
Cultural references for GTA players
The aesthetics of an era is undoubtedly one of the reflections of the ideals of that era. Considering how current generations are trying to break old stereotypes, it seems safest for Grand Theft Auto to change up the style of the characters and rely on today’s fashion standards to keep the new franchise.
One of the greatest things the 80s gave the world was a myriad of movies and music that impacted those industries to this day. Millennials and Gen Z can easily understand references from Back to the Future, Alien, Die Hard, etc. The 80s music scene has also had a big impact today, even making its way into TikTok. However, Rockstar can do better than these types of benchmarks.
Sure, “Take on Me” is still a beloved song, but stealing a car and playing Kali Uchis’ “Telepatia” sound system or Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call me By Your Name)” would give Grand Theft Auto has a much better atmosphere. There are so many TikTok hits that could be part of the game’s soundtrack that not using them would be a complete waste. Speaking of vehicles, it would be a much better inclusion to have Teslas available to fly than many cars of the era, just to fit into the possibly larger world of Grand Theft Auto.
One of the most important elements of the game is remote communication. Of course, in Grand Theft Auto Vice City, players can talk directly to characters for each mission. However, after Grand Theft Auto 5 which already included mobile phones, returning to this type of communication might seem more of a burden for players. Drones could also be a cool addition to a new installment of Grand Theft Auto, and the game could include missions to pilot or take down some of them. Technology is a boon no matter how it is used.
One of the main strengths of a 1980s-inspired Grand Theft Auto game would be the lack of recognizable celebrities. Obviously, there are plenty of fans who would absolutely love to see Cher or Tom Cruise in a Grand Theft Auto game, but having Elon Musk or Miley Cyrus, or a clear replacement for them, make a cameo would be more interesting these days. While it’s not impossible for Rockstar to release a good episode of GTA in the 1980s, there’s a risk that it might look too much like its Vice City game, making a more modern setting seem like the best option.
