Many people were excited about the highly anticipated new adaptation of the video game franchise, “Mortal Kombat”. The popular fighting game is considered one of the most successful video game series of all time, with many of its characters, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, considered some of the most recognizable and iconic characters. of the video game fandom.
Naturally, there was a lot of pressure from the studio, Warner Bros., to meet fan expectations. This new attempt to bring ‘Mortal Kombat’ to the big screen, however, is largely another Hollywood attempt to lay the groundwork for a ‘Mortal Kombat’ movie franchise, rather than taking the time to create a movie that fans can appreciate in its right. The result is this jerky, over-the-top, poorly-written wreck of a movie that will likely only serve as a disappointment for fans of the “Mortal Kombat” series, and a huge twist for all other curious moviegoers. on whether to see the film at all.
The film incorporates much of the history and mythos of the original “MK” games into this film. In order to save Earth from Outworld (a darker and more violent alternate dimension of Earth), the planet’s mightiest warriors train to compete in a tournament pitting the greatest fighters from our world and Outworld against each other. . While these “Earthrealm” warriors train, however, the Outworld’s evil sorcerer, Shang Tsung, sends his best fighters to sabotage the competition and ensure the protectors of Earth fall before the tournament begins.
The entire plot of “Mortal Kombat” 21 seems to be more about setting up a bigger conflict and storyline in the future rather than focusing on developing an actual movie here. For just under two hours, the film sets up the major conflict, the titular Mortal Kombat tournament between Outworld and Earthrealm and their respective combatants, without ever showing the tournament, leaving it open for a sequel.
Indeed, one of the biggest complaints from “Mortal Kombat” fans about the new film is the fact that the movie completely leaves out the classic titular tournament that serves as one of the series’ main overarching storylines ( you know, basically the reason they fight in the first place and the main thing the fans were excited to see). Removing this aspect of the storyline in favor of just passing it off as an upcoming episode feels like a bit of a bummer.
As a result, the film lacks a definitive conclusion, seeming to lack a major ending or final battle (though I guess the somewhat underwhelming fight sequence between the newly resurrected Scorpion and his rival Sub-Zero counts). It’s like you go see ‘Rocky’ and the movie shows you all of his training and takes time to edit the main fight, but in the end the filmmakers just decided to push it so you had to see the sequel in order. to see Rocky take on Apollo.
Despite the missing tournament look, however, the film still delivers a good amount of action and violence that has made the video game series so famous in the past without coming across as too bloody and/or excessively tasteless, seeming over the top. than anything else. Perhaps limited by its CGI (one of the characters, Goro the four-armed monster, looks like a character from a Playstation 3 game), the film’s violent moments don’t feel too realistic, and the film doesn’t adopt not fully the most stomach-churning “fatalities” that involve characters tearing out thorns or other body parts that have earned the series a significant level of controversy over the years.
Many “MK” fans might be happy to see some of their favorite Fatalities appear in live-action, as well as being able to see their favorite fighters on the big screen. With such a rich cast of characters at their disposal, “Mortal Kombat” fans might find it odd that the movie would instead choose to focus on an all-new character, Cole Young (Lewis Tan). Tan, like most of the actors in this movie, gives a lazy, overrated performance, almost like he’s reading off-screen cue sheets written by your regular 80s action screenwriter. That and the other poor performances in the movie may be more the result of the film’s script than anything else (it’s going to be hard to make anything in the film’s script sound believable or authentic). The film tries to be funny a good deal of the time, but only the occasional joke or two lands. Fans of the franchise might find themselves laughing more in recognition of those famous lines from the actual games, such as “Flawless Victory” or “Get over here!” says out loud that attempts at humor that the film tries to make.
In all honesty, adapting a popular video game franchise into a movie has never been quite successful before. Many “Mortal Kombat” fans in particular remember the two gruesome live-action adaptations of “Mortal Kombat” from the mid-’90s that were ridiculously bad with some of the most drawn-out, goofy lines you’ll ever hear in a movie. . In that regard, this new ‘Mortal Kombat’ is by far an improvement on previous films, but still remains a shameless grab whose sole purpose is to prepare for another film in the future.
Perhaps fans of the beloved game series will be most disappointed with this disappointing reboot (no one is more disappointed by a bad song from a good musician than fans of that musician after all). Overall, the filmmakers’ efforts to hype sequels to this film might have been better served by simply making a TV adaptation of the series and condensing this whole movie into an episode or two. It may be that the next installments of this film make the series fairer and deliver an “MK” movie that fans can get excited about. This movie may be a disappointment, but considering how forgettable it is ultimately, at least it won’t stay in your memory for long.
