The GTA franchise has been a monumental success for Rockstar, and the effort behind every game is absolutely astounding. The developers have created several compelling stories, memorable characters, expansive game worlds, and entire towns with vibrant personalities.
Each GTA game strives to be bigger, better, and more authentic than the last, making the series one of the most important parts of the gaming zeitgeist. most discussed and controversial of the series, GTA 4, brought many changes to the formula.
Its sequel, GTA 5, saw the studio scale back some of these changes and expand on them simultaneously. This article dives into some differences between GTA 4 and 5 that fans might spot right off the bat.
One of the main points of contention between GTA 4 fans and critics was its divisive driving physics. The game took a very different approach to driving mechanics than previous titles, especially when it came to the weight of the cars and how much more realistic they were.

The in-game phone was a nice touch in GTA 4, especially in terms of how it allowed players to make decisions they previously couldn’t. Hanging out with characters was a possibility that wasn’t explored as it was in GTA 4, adding a new level of interactivity to the series.
GTA 5 doubled down on that and brought even more features to the phone, including fully fleshed out internet. Players can now surf the net, read interesting articles and invest in the stock market, among other things.
The phone has become an important tool in the game and a much fleshed out mechanic since its debut, much to the delight of fans.
GTA 4’s combat was perhaps one of the studio’s biggest advancements and included a new cover system. The cover system allowed combat to be much more forgiving than just strafe and search for beams and columns to hide behind.
On top of that, enemies also had some sort of health bar. It wasn’t entirely new, but it did make combat more “gamey”. GTA 5 completely removed the health bars from story mode, which increased immersion, as the UI remained skeletal and contained only the most useful information.
GTA 4 removed many customization options for Niko that the franchise’s previous game contained. Gone are the barbers and tattoo artists who could have given Niko a massive makeover if he needed it. This was possibly in order to emphasize the gritty nature of the game and to separate it from previous games in the series.
GTA 5 saw many of these features return to the fold, including barbers and tattoo artists for all three protagonists. Players could again customize character outfits and appearances to a greater extent than the previous game in the series.
GTA 4 contained many side activities such as going to the bar, playing darts and, of course, bowling. It made Liberty City all the more vivid and authentic and was an integral part of why the game world was so incredibly immersive.
GTA 5 has dialed up to 11 when it comes to side activities, as players can now directly play sports like golf or tennis. This was absolutely unprecedented as the game had so many distractions that players could spend days fooling around and trying out different pastimes.
This was one of the most talked about aspects of GTA 5, and rightly so.
