A 30-year-old man, Jaskaran Singh, is at the center of an extortion investigation in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This investigation, led by Peel Regional Police (PRP), concerns several incidents including mischief, threats, and firearms-related offenses since December 2023.
Task Force Operation
On May 29, the PRP’s 25-member special task force, which specializes in extortion cases, executed a search warrant at a home in Toronto, leading to the arrest of Jaskaran Singh. Singh faces 17 charges, ranging from illegal possession of firearms to extortion and mischief over $5,000.
Accusations brought
Among the charges against Singh are:
- Negligent storage of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Occupying a motor vehicle knowing it contained a firearm
- Mischief over $5,000
He is also accused of multiple counts of:
- Extortion
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon
- Occupying a motor vehicle knowing it contained a prohibited device
- Violation of court order
Impact on the Community
PRP leader Nishan Duraiappah expressed concern over the impact of these incidents on the victims and the community. Extortion primarily targeting South Asian businesses has become a troubling trend, according to Duraiappah.
Survey Results
Since the investigation began, the task force has already made 13 arrests and laid 83 criminal charges including extortion, conspiracy, arson and possession of firearms. Several weapons and ammunition were seized, in addition to 11 kg of crystal meth, six stolen vehicles valued at $250,000 and $10,000 in cash linked to criminal activity.

PRP encourages anyone with information or who has been the victim of an extortion-related crime to contact their hotline or Crime Stoppers to report anonymously. The investigation also receives support from the Ontario Criminal Intelligence Service, funded by the provincial government.
