Retro video games give gamers a flashback to their youth

Les jeux vidéo rétro donnent aux joueurs un flashback sur leur jeunesse

In 1977, Rick Weis received a very precious Christmas present: an Atari 2600. His parents bought him the hugely popular game console – the first to popularize interchangeable video game cartridges – to keep him from spending too much time at the arches. It worked better than expected. Within weeks, he began an obsessive cartridge collection, and today at 57, he is one of the best collectors in the world.

Of more than 400 games released for the system in North America, Weis is only four short, and these elusive games are so rare – and expensive by five figures – that a full set seems out of reach.

At his home in Portland, Oregon, Weis proudly displays the games, complete with their original packaging and instruction manuals, along with other treasures, including three Atari displays he acquired.

Like a music fan who loves jazz or a movie buff whose distant thumb instinctively navigates to the classic movie channel, Weis enjoys entertainment from a bygone era. And video games have been around long enough to have spawned a culture of preservationists – gamers who still delight in the simple beauty of games played with a joystick and single fire button in this increasingly complex world.

Through game fairs, museums, and even new games for old systems (programmed by hobbyists and called “homebrew”), they want others to share their appreciation.

“Unlike modern games, you can play it in just 15 minutes,” says Weis, whose obsession with collecting led him to launch the annual Portland Retro Gaming Expo, which typically attracts some 12,000 players and dealers. “I grew up playing all the games with friends and family. For many people, these games remind them of their youth and they want to share them with their children. “

In the Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas, visitors can relive those younger days — or learn about games of yesteryear — at the National Videogame Museum. The facility houses a video game console timeline, an ’80s arcade game gallery and other exhibits that, before the pandemic, drew around 60,000 enthusiasts a year.

“Our collection is more than just games. These are oral histories with the developers or the people who created them. These are backups of the software. It’s the archiving and preservation of actual documents, press kits and things like that,” says John Hardie, one of the “There are objects out there – games and systems – for which the only knowledge you had of the existence of an old press file.

Even modern game developers have gotten into the nostalgia craze.

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, 52, recently brought back his original

Pro Skater video game, 20 years after its initial release for Sony

PlayStation console. But here’s the twist: although the new game (now

playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) features the original skater

characters – Hawk and other pros – they’ve aged two decades.

“I felt so lucky and proud that almost all of the original skaters on our roster are still around and actively skating, so let’s highlight that in terms of doing their current age,” Hawk says. “If they were stuck in this time capsule of being 20 or 30, I don’t think it would do them justice.”

While Hawk’s game is nostalgia in the form of an update – a sort of “deluxe edition” of an old favorite – the opposite dynamic also exists. Some people are making new games for consoles that haven’t been produced in decades. It would be like a musician wanting their new album pressed on phonograph wax cylinders.

So-called “homebrewers” program new games on the simple code of older systems – the Atari 2600 is particularly popular – and sell them online to other enthusiasts.

An older developer was even brought back into the field. Decades ago, 59-year-old Dan Kitchen developed games for the Atari 2600, including the 1982 home version of the arcade classic Donkey Kong (along with his older brother Garry), then branched out into a successful career programming games for Commodore 64 personal computers, various Nintendo consoles and other platforms.
