Gamers unfamiliar with Final Fantasy XII’s gambit system will positively hate this: an artificial intelligence that learns how you play video games – and then takes over for you, while you put down the controller and watch ( or go get a sandwich).
In a bid to automate the daunting task of relaxing and playing a first-hand video game, Sony’s patent application describes an artificial intelligence that observes how you play over time and then forms a “profile” of your unique style of play which, when activated, simulates human play. »
Why would anyone want to let an AI robot achieve gaming greatness for them? Aren’t games just about giving people (not machines) a unique form of escape? Well, on the one hand, your AI avatar might just make it through that tough boss fight that gave you endless tantrums. Sony cites one such use case in its app: “For example, the AI character can proceed in automatic mode to complete specific game tasks that are difficult for the user.”
We can already see the potential there. Don’t have the mental stamina (or fingers) for Kratos’ epic showdown with Sigrun in God of War? With an AI stand-in waiting behind the scenes, you can theoretically turn on your computerized companion and watch the Valkyrie Queen fall, probably none the wiser, into a robot-run version of Kratos whose divine focus never falters. There’s nothing in the patent application that says the technology in development is meant to be backward compatible for existing games, but hey, we can dream.
Huge games with lots of moving parts have tried to give players the keys to automating certain tasks themselves, with FFXII’s gambit system being one of the most prominent examples that directly affects moment-to-moment gameplay. (and not, you know, just gathering resources or crafting time-consuming items in the background). This system, a sort of lightweight action script that allowed players to set instructions for how each character should behave under certain conditions, was divisive for some (we, for the record, loved it, and here are some a very good example in action) – but it’s still child’s play compared to what Sony seems to want to do here.
“The method includes generating a user gaming profile of a user, wherein the user gaming profile defines a user gaming style that simulates the user’s gaming,” Sony explains in its patent filing. The method includes receiving a replacement request for the user playing a first game application. The method includes controlling an instance of the first game application based on the user’s play style of the user game profile. »
It’s a verbose way of saying that Sony is aiming for an AI that can do digitally adept work pretending to be you. The patent application states that the system is intended to be used for “specific parts” of a game (i.e. the parts that puzzled you), so we don’t know if Sony has the intent to let a robot “win” a full game for you. Call us crazy, but we kind of doubt the point here is to watch your AI alter ego play through an entire game from start to finish… while you’re jetting off on a beach vacation.
