In new Code Ninjas franchise, kids learn to code while playing video games

Dans la nouvelle franchise Code Ninjas, les enfants apprennent à coder tout en jouant à des jeux vidéo

SOUTH OGDEN — Seventh-grader Hayden Baker is a yellow belt, but he didn’t throw any kicks or punches to earn the accolade. He learned the basics of game development in JavaScript, a programming language.

“A lot of kids are in front of computers for different reasons,” he said. “I like to tell the computer what to do.”

Hayden is one of the kids enrolled in a new Code Ninjas franchise in South Ogden, where kids learn to code while creating and playing their own video games. The company has hundreds of locations, including nine in Utah. The Weber County franchise opened this year and more than 100 children have already enrolled in the program.

According to owners Jared Snell and Rick Sollis, kids like it because they spend time playing video games. Parents like it because their kids learn advanced coding skills without nagging them.

“Where the curriculum is completely play-based, it’s so much fun for the kids,” Sollis said. “They don’t even realize they’re learning.”

Both owners have computer experience. Snell worked as a software developer in higher education for 25 years before deciding to take his career in another direction.

“I was just a little tired working for this man,” he said. “My wife said, ‘Hey, why not look at franchising? And I’m like, I don’t want to flip the burgers. But I started looking around and found Code Ninjas and I just thought what they were doing was really cool.

He enlisted Sollis as a partner in opening a location in northern Utah. A gamer himself, Sollis was drawn to the video game development aspect of the franchise. He also saw Code Ninjas as the type of program he wanted to see when his son expressed an interest in coding at age 12.

The program is structured like a karate dojo, Sollis said, where participants ages 7 to 14 “crown” each other, while children as young as 5 are placed in a basic learning track. Older kids start at a white belt and end at a black belt as the program gets progressively more difficult, going at their own pace.

“It’s not like we’re standing in front of everyone saying, OK, everybody’s doing this, and Johnny, you gotta follow through,” Snell said. “Some kids go through things really fast and some kids struggle a bit, and we help them.”

Beyond assistance from Snell and Sollis, Code Ninjas also employs “senseis” — typically computer science and computer engineering students at Weber State University or high school students interested in coding — to help participants solve the problems they encounter.

Typically, says Sollis, it takes kids three to five years to achieve a black belt. To earn this rank, participants must develop an app, which Code Ninjas then helps them publish.

“It would be pretty cool to tell my grandpa he can get my game from the (Google) Play Store,” Hayden said, talking about his goal of eventually earning a black belt.

He said he wanted to create a game where players can build and ride roller coasters. Jordan Francis, another Code Ninjas participant, said he wanted to create an app to help Roblox players earn Robux digital currency to use in that game.

Much of what kids learn through Code Ninjas are college-level skills, Sollis said. And if the students complete the entire program, Snell said, “They would be way beyond what I did in college.”

Snell sees the movement to teach children coding at a young age as comparable to the push for increased literacy in the United States in the early 1900s. While almost everyone uses technology, few know how to build it. and improve it.

“Society has come a long way and I think we’re now in the same bottleneck where a lot of people are reading tech but not tech, and I think working with kids is going to change that for us,” said he declared.

Snell and Sollis plan to continue that mission as their franchise enters its first year of summer camps — week-long, instructor-led programs that teach specific skills, like becoming a YouTuber, creating Minecraft mods, learning the basics of robotics, and create and print 3D designs.

Throughout the summer, the South Ogden Code Ninjas will continue to host their regular lineup, during which attendees can hit up physical locations and code for a few hours a week. Times are flexible, as parents can bring their children anytime between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturdays. If a participant misses a week, those hours can be banked for some time in the future.

“That’s one thing parents love is that it’s flexible so it works with their schedule,” Sollis said.

While kids learn coding at their own pace, the two owners noted that the benefits of Code Ninjas extend beyond the curriculum. Students have realized that the value of paying attention in school, especially during math class, is more than the grades on their report cards.

One of the most significant things they’ve seen kids – regardless of age or gender – take away from Code Ninjas, however, is improved self-esteem and new friends.

“(Sollis) coached football for years, I coached football for decades and it’s a different element here,” Snell said. “Kids, you know, they find each other, they find other friends.”
