Cozy Grove Review: Bearably Campy

When I got the Cozy Grove mission, I immediately jotted down the explanation that it was a game I could only play for 30 minutes at a time. I’m much more used to grinding hours of gameplay into as short a time as possible, but this is one that actually required me to take my time with it. It is, after all, the story of a camper arriving on an island of ghost bears and lending them aid. It’s not something you do overnight.

However, the more I played Cozy Grove, the more I appreciated the patience it demanded of me…the more it felt like a refreshing break or an eager time to wait for each day. I wouldn’t mind playing more Cozy Grove in one session, but I can’t fault it for introducing an interesting experience that kept me coming back to see more every day.

Cozy Grove places players in the role of a spirit scout who arrives on a mysterious island. You’ll soon encounter a character known as Flamey: literally a talking bonfire who warns you that the island is full of ghosts who need your help. As a Spirit Scout, it’s your job to help them, but Flamey can only reveal these ghostly presences when powered by Spirit Logs. Luckily, it doesn’t take long for you to find your first ghost, which reveals the first ghost – a scout bear or scout bear…definitely a bear in scout gear.

You talk with this bear, help them with certain tasks on the island, and they become corporeal for a time, adding color to their space on the otherwise silent island and awarding you a spirit journal and other prizes . Take this spirit journal back to Flamey and its power will increase, revealing the presence of another ghost, but also requiring an increased number of journals for the ghost’s next power-up and reveal.

And so you go to the island to meet the new ghost bears (they’re all different bear type characters), learning little bits about them and helping them out when needed, after which they’ll give you rewards like a spirit journal, coins, or resources to spruce up your campsite around Flamey. It can be a tinkerer (handyman?) who can create tools or craft items or a sea captain who happily lists all the resources you come across for rewards.

One thing is for sure though, these ghost bears all forget their purpose of being ghosts. Once you have helped them, it will take them a day to work their way through the fog of their being and have something new to share with you. I’ll admit that their duties are mostly about fetching quests, but none of that is that difficult to accomplish.

This brings us to the basic gameplay loop of Cozy Grove. You cannot play this game all at once. Each ghost has its own story to advance, and you can only do so once per day in real time. Eventually, you’ll run out of ghostly errands to run, story to advance, and spirit journals to add to Flamey’s power. It means falling asleep, stopping and waiting for the next day in real time. This might be a bummer for those who want to pilot Cozy Grove as much as possible, but it also adds a kind of tranquility and anticipation to every session of the game. You can’t force the game to move at your pace, so might as well enjoy of your time with him. At the same time, each day offers new opportunities to see what’s next.

During my review period, Cozy Grove became something of a highlight of my day. Some ghost tales would end on a cliffhanger one day and I would look forward to them the next day to see what happened or how I could help. The fact that Cozy Grove’s visual style was overall pleasing to the eye and that the music was – at all times – absolutely relaxing also worked well in making game looping something I was more than willing to embrace. It also helps that the characters have narratives ranging from comedic and over the top to bittersweet and unexpectedly impactful and I generally started to feel for them all as I got to know them more through the force-paced gameplay.

What can a Scout do with their free time?

Luckily, for those who don’t want to cut short their daily visits, it’s not like Cozy Grove doesn’t offer you opportunities for after-school activities. The island is full of resources to explore and side tasks to complete. On the one hand, you can dig around piles of leaves, shake fruit and nut trees, dig dirt mounds, and mine rocks to get much-needed resources for your daily activities. You can also go fishing to collect ocean creatures for your catalog. Once you unlock the Hand Bear Ghost or the Baker Bear Ghost, you can craft different tools, furniture, and food items. You can catalog everything you’ve ever brought to the Sea Captain’s Ghost to earn rewards. And it continues to expand as you continue to help these characters, upgrade Flamey, and discover more ghosts with unique abilities and stories.

Back at camp, you can collect and place spirit animals like birds and deer that have certain likes and dislikes about them. You can even plant fruit trees, flower pots and berry bushes that also react to their environment. To that end, as you progress through Cozy Grove, you collect all kinds of decorations. You can spruce up your camp and place things like wooden camping furniture, spooky or fancy decor, and lamps that your collected flora and fauna might enjoy. This matters because happy pets, plants, and trees give you special resources you can use to cook and craft to further improve your campsite.

I have mentioned coins several times in this review. There’s a slightly creepy looking fox named Mr. Kit in Cozy Grove and he has a daily arrangement of supplies he’s ready to sell you in his traveling shop if you’re willing to part with the coins or other resources necessary for them. You can buy special resources like eggs, wood or salt, new bird pets, special furniture and even Mr. Kit’s inventory upgrades. You can even buy new clothes to customize your character. What’s more fun is that every day Mr. Kit stocks his shop with new items, so you never know what you might find overnight. You can also save the coins you’ve collected to upgrade your campsite and increase the number of resources you can store – a very handy investment indeed.

With that in mind, while Cozy Grove might have you stopping for the day on basic progression, there’s almost always something you can do if you really want to keep going for a while, so those looking to extend their experience everyday shouldn’t feel too dismayed. Although I wish there was sometimes a way to move time forward. Especially at extremely juicy or crucial moments in a ghost’s story.

A Spirit Scout is kind, courteous, patient and helpful

Ultimately, Cozy Grove is a much more relaxing, yet in-depth experience than I could have ever expected when I first got started. Much like the best parts of Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, there was a way to hang on to it and I can say with all my heart that even though I wasn’t reviewing it, the way it grabbed me did. made an experience of which I am happy. come back to everyday life. There’s an unexpected heaviness to this game. Everything is so relaxed and cheerful most of the time that you can almost forget all the characters are ghosts with baggage that keeps them tied to Cozy Grove. It’s through this that I grew attached to them and it really hit me when their stories took a turn that I didn’t expect, or that brought me back to the reality of their situation for a moment. .

Cozy Grove is a very different type of life simulation. It’s so cheerful on the surface, but underneath the bark there’s a process of patience and letting go of the things that are holding them down or keeping them tied down in a hard place. I think for as fast-paced, hectic, and chaotic as our lives often become, there’s something a lot of gamers could take away from Cozy Grove, and the daily journey with this game is well worth it if you have the time. and determined to keep coming back.
