Leah Burr tries out an educational video game at the 7 Generation Games booth during the MSU Spring Honor Dance and Powwow Celebration on Saturday.

Video games that take students on virtual field trips to a powwow or to collect herbal remedies are proving to be useful tools for reinforcing educational concepts.

Game developer 7 Generation Games of Minneapolis brought a sample of its products to Minot State University’s 31st Annual Dance and Pow Wow Celebration this weekend.

AnnMaria De Mars, president of 7 Generation Games and a former teacher, said the company started developing games about five years ago with the help of local elders. The company held design workshops with students from Four Winds and Warwick schools on the Spirit Lake reservation. Four Winds used the games in its after-school programming, and Warwick incorporated the games into its curriculum.

All games revolve around indigenous culture. A game contains scenes from an old powwow hosted by MSU. The developers also include native children as voice actors in the recording of the scripts.

“We try to make everything authentic,” De Mars said.

Schools on the Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain reservations are among the schools nationwide using the video game software.

Growing Math, a free platform developed by 7 Generation Games, is made available free of charge to schools in Indigenous communities in Arizona, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, and the Dakotas. Teacher training is included. The project is fully funded by a $1 million COVID-19 Rapid Response grant from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Schools are invited to participate by contacting [email protected].

In addition to the USDA, 7 Generation Games has received funding through the National Institutes of Health.

The company’s first research used educational standards pre-tests and post-tests to determine how students who played video games for 10 weeks fared relative to their peers. The results showed a 10% improvement for students who didn’t play the games and a 30% improvement for those who did, De Mars said.

Going forward, the company struggled to persuade schools to take part in the research by offering the games to only half of their students because they saw how well the games worked, she said. declared. The research was therefore modified to compare the progress of students who played more regularly with those who did not.

The results showed significant improvement from students who played more regularly, but they also found a sweet spot of half an hour of play three times a week seemed optimal.

The games can be played online or offline, making them suitable for schools or homes that don’t have internet or don’t have reliable internet access. In the event of a connection loss, the games retain data that can be downloaded later so that students do not lose points or credit for their efforts.

The company has grown from two employees to around 12, with several working remotely in different parts of the country. 7 Generation Games now offers 14 games, 11 of which teach math and three teach decision making. The company has also developed games that can help teach languages, including an English/Spanish version that is used in Chile.

The company’s growth has been fueled by growing interest from schools.

“He really exploded last year,” De Mars said. Use of the board’s games has quadrupled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as educators seek new ways to encourage learning in a changed environment.
